Who is the proud holder of this extraordinary collection of trophies? A sports-mad student… A young athlete applying the maxim of a healthy mind in a body to match… The image radiates good-natured humour, all sparkling cups and lively figures, gleaming medals and fluttering penants. A composition full of life itself. Here are the trophy from the Saut Hermès, a cyclist’s medal, a racing car, a pair of skates, a golfer, a fencer… even a life-saving certificate. Dated 1895, the award belonged to Emile Hermès, who once saved three people from drowning by diving into the Seine. True to the philosophy of the house of Hermès, the carré celebrates every possible sport. Equestrian activities have a special place, of course, but any discipline that trains the body and stimulates the mind finds favour, too. The practised gesture, the contained power of movement, are the stuff of hard work and natural talent. Harnessed to cleverly-designed clothing, equipment and accoutrements…

À qui peut bien appartenir cette incroyable collection de trophées ? À un étudiant fou de sport, sans aucun doute. À un jeune athlète qui applique à la lettre la fameuse locution de l’esprit sain et du corps sain… Un humour bon enfant émane de cette évocation. Les coupes brillent, les personnages semblent animés, rubans, médailles et étendards virevoltent ; la vie, en un mot, habite cette composition. On y découvre le trophée du Saut Hermès, la médaille d’un coureur cycliste, une formule 1, des patins, un golfeur, un escrimeur… et même un diplôme de sauveteur. Il date de 1895 et n’est autre que celui d’Émile Hermès, qui, plongeant dans la Seine, sauva trois personnes de la noyade. Fidèle à la philosophie de la maison, ce carré met en scène tous les sports. Les activités équestres, certes, lui sont chères, mais toutes les pratiques sportives qui sollicitent l’esprit ont sa faveur. L’aisance du geste, la puissance du mouvement sont affaire de travail et de talent. Elles dépendent aussi de l’adéquation du vêtement, de l’équipement, de l’accessoire…
